For most people, the absolute worst way to stop smoking now is through the use of will power!  Like moods and emotions, willpower fluctuates.  One day it is strong.  the next day may be a down day and willpower fades.  In reality, it is usually neither consistent nor effective.

Among stop smoking procedures, there are countless methods, programs, substitute products, pills, chewing gums, self-help tapes and books, etc.  Equally important, many are designed to help build up the personal power to resist.  In other words, they are designed to eliminate the desire.  Instead of giving up something that a person enjoys (a sacrifice), the individual’s goal is to be rid of something that isn’t wanted (stop smoking now), a much more agreeable personal goal position.

Reasons to Stop Smoking Now

There are two principle reasons for smoking:  Identification and replacement. 

  • Identification is the situation in which the smoker indulges in the habit because others who he admires do so — parents, peers, entertainment or sports figures, etc.  With this in mind, “Identification” is the most common and easiest to change.
  • Replacement smoking occurs when smoking is used to replace some deficit in life-lack or companionship, love, acceptance, self-esteem, security, independence, etc. — or to replace some pre-existing habit such as overeating, reaction to stresses or boredom, etc. As a result, “Replacement” smokers sometimes derive sensual gratification from smoking.  They enjoy touching or feeling the cigarettes and tapping the pack.  They also enjoy seeing the flame on a lighter or the curling of rising smoke, and also the smell of burning tobacco.  Ultimately the lighting of the cigarette (cigar or pipe) in itself becomes a ritual. 

The Nature of Smoking

Since smoking is both physical and mental, success in a stop-smoking now program must change not only the mental attitude, but also the physical reaction. Through hypnosis and EFTTM it is possible to change the client’s reaction to the desire to smoke and the triggers that keep the smoking habit active. Even though the smoker  stopped smoking, the habit is still  active. But like most activities, because it is not used, it tends to fade and disappear.

It is also important to determine just what personal need smoking satisfies.   Some smokers seek to fill a need to nurture themselves … or get a “pickup” at the start of the day while others feel smoking  relieves stress or provides moments of relaxation.  Still more feel cigarette smoking makes social contacts more comfortable.
